ACTIVITY: Easter 2021 Expedition – to Tin Hut

DESCRIPTION: This will be a four day trip into the Jagungal Wilderness area. Starting from Guthega Power Station we will ascend via the Munyang River valley to Schlinks Pass. We can briefly explore several of the iconic cattlemans and ski tourer’s huts on the way including Whites, Schlinks and Valentines Huts. All going well we will stop near either Schlinks Pass or Valentines Hut on our first night. Distance between 10 and 13km.
Then it will be to Mawson’s Hut and then Tin Hut for our second day. Approx distance between 9 and 6km. Mostly off track.
Third day will still be off track up and over Gungarten pass and then Mt Gungarten and down to Schlinks Pass. Then onto the aqueduct bench from Whites River hut to Horse Camp Hut. Approx distance 10km.
Our Final day will be the easiest and entirely down hill; approx 6km.
GRADE: 4 – 5 due to being with full packs and approx 1/3rd off track walking as per grading document,
TOTAL DISTANCE: approx 35km
RISKS: We will be walking in exposed country above the tree line, so be prepared for all weathers and UV exposure. There is significant off track walking so expect uneven ground. This is multi day and fully independent walking with full packs so a good level of fitness and experience is required.
COVID-19 Policy If the campsites near the huts are crowded we will be using alternative independent campsites.
GEAR: All camping gear including tents, clothing, food and cooking equipment.
DATE: 02 – 05 April 2021
TIME: Meet at 08:00 am on Friday 2nd. Expect to return home mid to late afternoon on Monday 5th April.
MEETING POINT: Cooma North Car shopping centre park
COST: Nil, apart from contributions for car pooling by agreement.
Note that each vehicle will need a Kosciuszko NP entry permit – an annual pass is more convenient.
