The Geehi Bush walking Club is planning a 14 km round trip walk to the Sentry Box rock north of Cooma on the ACT border on Sunday 17 October 2021.

Subject to Covid directives, the plan is to meet at the Cooma North Shops for a briefing and carpooling, then drive a total of 44 kms north of Cooma North along the Shannons Flat Road to the Shannons Flat RFS shed, then take the left fork 1 km past the fire shed and drive a further 6.4 kms to leave the vehicles close to where the road crosses Bradley’s Creek.

The walk starts at elevation 1200m as we track east along an unmarked crown road and on into the southern most section of the Scabby Range Nature reserve. We then track north up to the ridge which marks the start of walk along the ACT border, being 1.5km walk from the cars.

We follow the ACT border along the ridge marked with the original surveyor’s rock cairns and at least one aboriginal stone feature to the north for 5.5 km until we reach the huge rock known as Sentry Box at 1696m altitude and grid reference 713 346 on the Yaouk 1:25,000 sheet. There will be stunning views all along the ridge which should be open going on the rock slabs. The area was severely burnt in 2020 which will have altered the snow gums and casuarina shrubs which are now recovering. We then plan to return via the same route. There is an alternate return route down the very steep face of the range, however this will require permission from the landowners which is yet to be received. That route may also have hazardous trees.

All the usual preparations apply such as stout boots, long trousers, sunscreen, hat, light jacket, lunch and snacks, water and medications. Covid restrictions will need to be determined closer to the date.
