Bobundra Nature Reserve 14th Sep 2025

A September walk to a high exposed peak on the Monaro will always be a gamble with the weather. Whilst the wind howled up on the Main Range, of which we had glorious views on the walk, we were spared and enjoyed a lovely sunny, calmish day.

The Bobundra Nature Reserve is only about 2 sq km, so it was only a shortish walk – but we managed to fill in the day with lots of breaks, photo opportunities and discussion identifying flora (and all sorts of other natural features for that matter). We even had a lizard trying to hitch a ride!

The walk commenced with a steady climb to the high point of the reserve, Bobundra trig. The area is a rocky, shale outcrop amongst the general basaltic Monaro plains. Great views were to be had of the snow covered Main Range area to the west. The trig itself is atop a beautifully built rock cairn 2m high adorned with many different lichens.

We then descended to the SE through undergrowth thicker than was described in the brochure, but the party coped well. Lunch was enjoyed in a clearing at the bottom alongside a watercourse toward the western boundary of the reserve.

The circuit back to the car to the N, NW, then SE was easier, with much meandering to follow the easiest route.
