Gulaga (Mt Dromedary) Walk 14 May 2022

Nine walkers took up the challenge of the steep Ascent of Gulaga mountain.  Along the way walkers shared their knowledge of geology, fungi, plants and the birds we saw.  This certainly made the uphill climb feel less arduous.  After a brief rest stop at the saddle the group took the Rainforest Track up to the summit where they enjoyed seeing the old trig marker. On the way up, the lush growth on trees and the tall tree ferns was amazing, especially the giant Pinkwood (Eucryphia moorei) that was green, as it was totally covered in moss. Boulders and trees were dripping with moss, lichen and ferns.

Some of the group then went on to explore the amazing granite tors that hold spiritual significance for the local Yuin people. The height, shape and features of these were an amazing sight.

Glimpses of Wallaga Lake and Bermagui bathed in sunshine were a highlight.

The steep descent challenged tired legs. Spectacular scenery and good company made a great day.

Next month’s walk is a Snow picnic. See Geehi website for details.
