Mt Tate and Consett Stephens Pass -10 Feb 2018.

In the end we did this as a day trip, or rather we tried to. A party of 7 set out from Guthega Ski resort and we had the first task of crossing the Guthega Creek to the ruins of the old ski rope tow and climbing up the pole line to the west Tate ridge. With all the exertions and with two of our party not as fit as they were in years past, time got away from us and we stopped for lunch just short of Mount Tate. Four of the more energetic of us made the side trip up to Mount Tate, while the rest of us … rested and enjoyed the fine views we already had.

We then retraced our steps as the weather looked like it was about to break, and we wanted to get back to the cars intact. The going down along the ridge line was certainly much easier, and we made better time getting to top of the pole line. Then we weaved and pressed our way through a mix of quite thick scrub and grassy steeper sections. By mid afternoon we were back down and glad for the easier walk along the track to Guthega Dam. In hindsight this would really be graded a hard walk even for experienced and fit walkers. Better luck next time.
