On 5th September we had a successful cross country ski day, with 5 Geehi’s paricipating.
In the end we relocated our trip to Perisher instead of Smiggins Holes so that we could ski up to the Porcupine and beyond on the back pole line trail to Charlottes Pass.
This was a good choice as we were rewarded with some fine views to the South over the Thredbo R valley to Drift Hill, Rams Head, and to the East to the Monaro Plains. On the way back we could see back to Charlottes Pass and the main range beyond above it. We went as far as Betts Creek, where an early lunch break was had and then back via Betts link, Charlottes Pas road and Wheatley Gap.
The weather was cloudy and lightly snowing to start with but it soon cleared to a bright sunny day. While the wind was a bit cool, views were terrific and we finished in the early afternoon.
Snow cover was very good for this time of year, and most of the trails were freshly groomed, which was excellent.
The snow has since melted significantly so it was good to get out and enjoy it this late in the season. Our next opportunity will be when the road to Charlottes Pass opens.
