Haycock Point Walk

Haycock Point Walk

As always the drive down to this coastal walk near Eden was long, but worth the trip.

Nature really turned it on for us with sightings of whales on our first look out to sea.

With strong off-shore winds there were plenty of mother and calf pairs within easy viewing distance from the many vantage points along the trail. Some of the other animals along the way were the resident kangaroos, a goanna, and a pod of dolphins was also spotted as they patrolled close to the rocky coastline.

Some fishermen encountered on the trail reported there were seals in the area (hence they had not caught any fish). However we didn’t see any…

We had lunch and explored the small Barmouth Beach. With the large red rocks nearby people took the opportunity to investigate the rock pools and strange weathered formations.

A hermit crab was found hiding in its prized seashell on the sandy bottom in knee deep water.

The walk back to the car park was along the same trail we had walked in on. The whales were seen departing the protected cove and heading south through the white cap waves off-shore.

We had time to do the Pinnacles loop walk on our way back to the highway allowing us to check out the coloured clay walls of this formation. There were a few photo ops at the lookouts along the trail and a quick return to the cars.

Thanks to the eleven attendees for making this such an enjoyable day out. Thanks also to the whales without whom the walk would have been pointless…

Grumpy cranky face goes to the unwanted passengers that crept their way into our clothing and skin… Ticks are always present in the scrub in the warmer months with this year being no exception. Several were found in hats and on clothing on arrival back at the car. While others were found much later buried in the skin of their hosts. Pointy parasites!
