Day 1: Main Range Lakes Walk, Sat 26th Nov.

This is the Snowy Mountains iconic walk is to trek above the tree line and as the name implies traverses past 4 of the glacial lakes. We summit peaks above 2,000m  with panoramic views over the Rolling Grounds to Jagungal, the Main Range and West to Victoria. It is one of the walks described in our book – Snowy Mountains Walks.

We will set out from Charlottes Pass and the first task is to take the road up to Seamans Hut and Rawson’s Pass before turning onto the pole line.

As we expect to walk over several snow drifts, warm boots with good grip will be useful.

We then make our way to top of the Muellers Ridge, and pass by Albina Hut Ruin site and then Albina Lake. After weave along the ridge line we will see Club lake to our right before climbing Mt Carruthers.

Then it is mostly down hill to the saddle above Blue Lake and later we will also see Headley Tarn to our left on our way to Snowy River Crossing.  After the river as short pull gets us back to our start point.

Grade; 3 – Medium, This is a walk on well formed track, but at this time of year expect walking across snow drifts. Distance is approx 22km with plenty of climbing and descending. So it is graded Medium. Expected duration is up to 6 hours depending on group size.

Day 2: Main Range Iconic Walk track – Charlottes Pass to Guthega, Sun 27th Nov.

This is a shorter walk also starting from Charlottes Pass. We will head along the new walking track that joins Charlottes Pass to Guthega Resort.

It follows the Snowy River Valley all the way to Guthega Dam. Travelling to and over the new suspension bridge over Spencer’s creek just before Passing Illawong Hut and the older suspension bridge over Snowy River. From Illawong Hut we follow the original track back to Guthega resort.

Grade: 3 – Medium, Distance is 9km and is on a mix of placed rock path and grid mesh. It is mostly down hill and should take approx 3 hours. A car drop off at the Guthega trail head prior will be arranged.

For the very energetic there is the option of crossing the Snowy River at the Illawong suspension bridge to climb Mt Twynam and return to Charlottes Pass via Blue Lake.

This is a strenuous climb but you are rewarded with expansive views and further alpine feel.

Grade; 4- Hard, Distance is approx 21km with significant climbing and some off track walking, mostly on well defined foot pads.
